Purpose
To give students an understanding of how second/foreign languages are learned, the difference between first language acquistion (FLA) and second language acquisition (SLA) and its relevance to the Faroese context.
Content
• Definition and characteristics of FLA
• Definition and characteristics of SLA
• Comparison of FLA & SLA
• Critical periods for acquistion of first language and the role of age in SLA
• Social aspects of SLA and teaching of English as a foreign language (TEFL).
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures by course instructor, projects and pair/group work of student teaching.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, learners must be able to:
• Assess the influence of FLA for foreign language learning.
• Compare and contrast FLA & SLA within the context of English learning in Faroese schools.
• Conduct an analysis of the challenges involved in second/foreign language learning in the context of the Faroese school system.
Assessment method
A written assignment on TEFL on the theoretical basis of SLA perspectives seen in Faroese classrooms.
