    The international summer institute

    The international summer institute in Faroese language and culture 2009.

    The international summer institute in Faroese language and culture at the university of Faroe, Fróðskaparsetur Føroya, started on August 1st and will run until Augsut 22nd. There are thirty-one students at the institute from several countries: seven from Austria, ten from the USA, four from Germany and others from Poland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Finland, Sweden and Norway.


    From nine to twelve every morning there are Faroese lessons, split into three groups. The teachers are Hjalmar P. Petersen Ph.D., Randi Kúrberg MA and Marjun Simonsen Cand Phil.


    In the afternoons there are lectures on various relevant topics:
    “Contemporary Faroese history” by Elin Súsanna Jacobsen, “Faroese and Globalization” by Zakaris S. Hansen, “The Faroes – an international fisheries nation” by Kate Sanderson, “Nature in Faroe” by Anna Maria Fosaa, “Faroese art” by Kinna Poulsen, and a get-together with Heri Joensen from Týr. 


    Óli á Geilini lectures on traditional Faroese ballads.


    The summer institute also offers among other activities practice of ringdancing, a guided tour of historical Tórshavn, a visit to the national museum, hiking to Kirkjubøur and sightseeing in Streymoy, Eysturoy and Suðuroy.


    The organizer of the summer institute is Turið Sigurðardóttir, professor at the faculty of Faroese.
