Purpose
This course will provide students with an overview of the linkages between music and major art movements of the 20th century. Through lectures, practical examples and discussions student will learn to analyse music/sound with regards to the mentioned linkages, as well as to develop their own insights into relevant movements, trends and periods.
Content
This course provides an overview of key theories of 20th century art history periods, with particular emphasis on music and sound as art phenomena. Through texts, lectures and discussions the course offers an introduction to philosophical and theory-based examinations of artistic creation in relation to relevant concepts, such as modernism, avant-garde, silence, exile, critique of modernity and minimalism. Key texts and works will be read and placed in context. In addition, the course will include presentations and analyses of selected works where the above-mentioned theoretical strands are tied and made tangible.
Learning and teaching approaches
Weekly lectures with practical examples and discussions.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: Explain main theories in 20th century music and discuss them critically. Students are also expected to have acquired fundamental concepts and the capacity to apply these to describe and reflect on their own music-making process.
