Prerequisites
Upper secondary school certificate or equivalent qualifications.
Purpose
Based on music theory, students will learn to independently assess music in relation to different quality parameters, genres and music history and to discuss music in precise terms.
Content
This course offers students an introduction to music theory, analysis and arrangement from the lens of music history. There will be emphasis on reinforcing students’ analytical skills in music and composition and developing students’ capacity to link music theory and aesthetic perspectives. Teaching is based on music theory concepts and terminology and students will enhance their ability to discern musical identity. Students will gain insight into academic music knowledge and learn to apply this in conjunction with challenges in their own music/artistic work.
Learning and teaching approaches
Teaching is organised as class-based teaching with lectures, debates, seminars, masterclasses and student presentations.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: - explain music theory from the lens of music history, - consider music in relation to different quality parameters and music genres and discuss this in precise terms, - link music theory and aesthetic perspectives - discern musical identity
Assessment method
Oral presentation lasting 30 minutes with 1-3 days’ preparation time on an assigned topic.

Bibliography
Relevant materials are circulated at the start of the course. For examination, students are required to submit the material discussed to during the course. The volume of this material must be equivalent to the provisions for BA-level courses at the Faculty of Faroese Language and Literature.
