Participants are required to have successfully completed: Independent Work II - Creative Writing
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to develop a critical approach to creative writing, to strengthen and develop individual writing projects, and to enable students to identify their own distinct style of writing.
Content
The course is a continuation of Independent work II, Creative writing. Like in the previous course, the course emphasizes in-depth work with individual texts, that students write over the course of the semester and submit as part of the course. The main focus will be close reading and text critique. Relevant primary texts will be read (essays, poetics, theory on creative writing) emphasizing reflections on and awareness of the process and methods of creative writing, and on writing in a broader literary context.The texts that students write throughout the course are collected in portfolios.
Learning and teaching approaches
Teaching spans 3 hours a week over one semester. The approach used is master classes where students’ own works are discussed and developed through close reading, text critique and critical group conversations.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: - demonstrate a development in their own creative writing (produce portfolio of texts) - demonstrate distinct style of writing (portfolio of texts) - discuss, with reflective perspective, their own writing and creative process - critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of their own texts - identify characteristics of own written work
Assessment method
Portfolio + annex (written reflections on own written work) submitted at the end of the course.

Bibliography
Relevant materials are circulated at the start of the course. In addition to the course bibliography, students will tailor their own personal reading list, which resonates with and challenges their own writing. The personal reading list must include a minimum of 5 literary works. The student will hand in the personal reading list at the beginning of the course.
