Purpose
Students learn to work critically and autonomously with their own music and to identify their own distinct style of music.
Content
This course is a continuation of Independent Work II – Music. As with the previous course, the teaching focuses on students’ own works composed throughout the course. The main emphasis will be on close listening and critical examination of own works. Students will be required to examine/read relevant theory, emphasising reflections on and awareness of the individual creative process, and on music in a broader artistic context.The music that students make throughout the course is collected in portfolios.
Learning and teaching approaches
Teaching spans 3 hours a week over one semester. The approach used is master classes where students’ own works are discussed and developed through group sessions with close listening, critique, and assignments.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: - demonstrate a development in their own music (produce portfolio) - demonstrate a distinct style of music (portfolio) - discuss, with reflective perspective, their own music and creative process - critically assess strengths and weaknesses of their own music - identify characteristics of own works
Assessment method
Portfolio + annex (written reflections on own works) submitted at the end of the course.
