Purpose
Students acquire the ability to think critically and draw on aesthetic theory and operate across genres (literature, music, visual art), in order to build an artistic awareness they can translate into practice.
Content
Through aesthetic theory, which students will be introduced to – and continually invited to reflect on – creative writing, philosophy, music, poetics and visual art, students will learn to operate across genres and conventions. This reflective exercise will enable students to confront and draw on artistic practice and the aesthetic experience they themselves unveil through the creative process. The course will include lectures and focused philosophical and literary workshop alongside creative exercises, and music will be present as a catalytic element, which will sharpen the students’ ability to create and think with autonomy and originality. Theoretical and artistic materials used in this course: selected literature, philosophical texts, aesthetic reflections and strategies, music and music theory will be gathered into a compendium featuring texts by, among others, Arthur Schopenhauer, Fernando Pessoa, Leonard Cohen, Gilles Deleuze and Marcel Proust, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Roland Barthes, Mieke Ball, Brian Eno and Olafur Arnalds.
