Purpose
The aim of the course is to give an introduction to the European avantgardes of the 20th century (and onwards). The course will be theory-driven and practice based and aims to explore different interdisciplinary and experimenting approaches to aesthetic expressions. Students acquire knowledge of key theories and concepts of the avantgardes as a (set of) historical period(s) as well as a practice, with a special focus on the cultural history of the avantgarde in the Nordic countries.
Content
Students will read a selection of theoretical as well as primary texts which have had decisive importance in understanding the history of the avantgardes in the 20th century. In addition to more well-known and internationally canonized figures of the avantgardes, the course will also include the work of historical and contemporary Nordic artists and scholars. Through creative exercises students will work across disciplines and genres, and presentations and discussions of the work produced will be a natural part of the course. Through lectures, workshops, texts, art works and discussions students will learn to recognize avantgarde strategies and develop their own understanding of relevant currents and periods, in order to build an artistic awareness, they can translate into practice.
Learning and teaching approaches
Teaching will be concentrated in 3-4 focused modules over the course of the semester with 4-hour sessions each time. The preparation needed for class will take place in the time between these modules. In addition to lectures and discussions there will be workshops, creative exercises and performative presentations. Please note, teaching can take place on Saturdays. A prerequisite for students to attend examination is that they have attended and participated actively in the teaching sessions and handed in 3 assignments throughout the course.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: - explain, analyze and contextualize main concepts and currents in the history of the avantgardes - use concrete practice-based experience/methods in operationalizing different avantgarde strategies in creative work of their own - reflect critically upon these methods
