Students must have completed the required core component of the BA in Faroese. Admission may also be granted under alternative prerequisites. (Refer to the programme description in force).

The purpose of this course is for students to acquire fundamental knowledge about structural changes in the Nordic languages from past to present. Students will be taught to detect similarities and differences between the Nordic languages at different linguistic levels, e.g. morphology, phonology, syntax, vocabulary. From the angle of historical comparison students will acquire knowledge about the various changes, which the languages have undergone through history, as well as the ability to express these changes. In the contemporary section, student will learn about the differences between the Nordic languages as they manifest today. Students will also gain insight into different classification methods of the Nordic languages.

This course is about the changes that have occurred in the structures of the different Nordic languages over the last 1000 years, approximately. Select topics will be discussed, e.g. morphological changes, phonological changes, changes in vocabulary, etc., and subsequently these changes will be compared. The angle will be comparative between languages and between periods.

Teaching and learning is arranged as lectures, student presentations and class-based discussions.

Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: • explain linguistic changes, which have occurred in the Nordic languages • explain the structure of the Nordic languages in the historical and contemporary context • analyse and discuss the structure of Faroese in the Nordic context.

Oral half-hour presentation with 3 days’ preparation on a set topic.
