Language Variation and Language Change (BA)

Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required core components of the BA in Faroese or other equivalent preconditions. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
The student will acquire theoretical knowledge about why and how changes happen at all levels in a language. This means we will look at where changes happen as the result of internal causes, and where changes occur because of external causes.
Content
To get knowledge about language change and variation with emphasis on Faroese phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Additionally, to get insight into what extent language acquisition, language contact and the inner structure causes language change.
Learning and teaching approaches
Talks and student-presentation. The student must also submit small assignments.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the semester, the students can: • explain terminology that is relevant for language variation and language change • discuss different changes that happen/happened in Faroese in particular • explain what characterizes Faroese. Written assignment (two weeks)

Lyle Campbell: Historical Linguistics, 4th edition, 2021 and different articles related to change and variation in especially Faroese. A complete list of relevant literature will be available at the beginning of the course.
