Purpose
This is an induction course in which the aim is to introduce students to this branch of science and work with Faroese from a societal perspective.
Content
Sociolinguistics is the science of language in society right now. This course will address how language users’ social position affects their individual language usage and attitude. We will focus on sociolinguistic methods and theories and, based on these, discuss the Faroese language from a sociolinguistic perspective. Linguistic variation and change are key concepts. Reading list Literature: We will use the textbook: Språkmøte – innføring i sosiolingivstikk (2003) by Gunnstein Akselberg, Britt Mæhlum, Unn Røyneland and Helge Sandøy.
Learning and teaching approaches
3 hours a week in the first semester. Lectures and student presentations.
Assessment method
6-hour written exam or set take-home assignment.
