Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required core component of the BA in Faroese or equivalent. Students may also enrol on this course as an individual course under alternative prerequisites. (Refer to the programme description in force).
Purpose
To afford students fundamental knowledge about sociolinguistics, especially the variation in language use and language attitudes detected in Faroese surveys and studies.
Content
Thematically the course is divided into two sections. The first section is a general introduction to sociolinguistics and how language variation is studied in a sociolinguistic context with emphasis on theory and methods. The second section focuses on how to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge as a basis for analyses of language variation in Faroese.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: • explain and analyse the linkages between language and society • explain the use of sociolinguistic tools in work with the Faroese language • analyse language variation using sociolinguistic methods and frameworks.
Assessment method
30-minute oral presentation with 3-day preparation time on a set topic.
