Purpose
To familiarize students with basic linguistic concepts. Special emphasis will be placed on phonetic transcription.
Content
The General Linguistics course is designed to familiarize students with basic linguistic concepts such as phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, dialectology and social linguistics. At the conclusion of the semester, students must take and pass an examination in General Linguistics. Passing this examination is imperative as doing so is a prerequisite for receiving permission to take examinations in the other introductory courses. For the examination the student should demonstrate, that he/she has insight into introductory linguistic and phonetic concepts and that he/she knows how to use IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). For the examination the student submits: 1 text book in general linguistics and 1 text book in phonetics.
Learning and teaching approaches
4 lessons per week during the first semester.
Assessment method
6-hours written exam with internal examiners.
