Purpose
To train the student to analyse the language usage of selected fields and provide him or her with a theoretical framework for such analyses.
Content
A selection of different types of oral and written nonfictional texts will be studied with regard to various scholarly purviews. In this way, students will learn to explain language usage and style, gain theoretical knowledge of language usage and stylistics, and receive training in assessing and adjusting language for various usages. At the examinaton the student should be able to demonstrate his or her ability to analyse a text with regard to language usage and stylistics, to discuss the submitted theory, and to place the analysed text in relation to the theories read. Examination requirements: 200 pages of theoretical text about language usage (including such aspects as: Characteristics of oral language versus written language, formal and informal language, official language standard versus various usage, purism, correctness, stylistics). 100 pages of text examples (oral texts such as for instance material from the Faroese radio and television broadcasting, and from the collection of the Faculty of Faroese of oral recording; written texts such as for instance newspapers, periodicals, schoolbooks).
Learning and teaching approaches
2 lectures per week over the course of 2 terms or the equivalent.
Assessment method
The student can 1: go for a 6-hours written examination. Students do not bring texts with them; they will be issued with the necessary texts. Or 2: go for an oral examination with 30 minutes preparation. Internal examiners...
