Purpose
To give students theoretical and practical knowledge of Faroese grammar as compared with related languages and grammars.
Content
The linguistic concept of grammar is the study of structures in language. The purpose of the grammar course is to give students theoretical and practical knowledge of Faroese grammar as compared with related languages and grammars. More specifically, class instruction will focus on the phonology, morphology and syntax of the Faroese language. Moreover, the connection between the three aspects will be shown. The content plane of language will be discussed from the perspective of semantics. The course will also serve as an introduction to dialectical grammar and the students will be introduced to the fact of linguistic variation (dialects, sociolects, spoken and written language). There will be two lectures per week over the course of three terms. At the examination the student should demonstrate: - that he/she has a good grasp of Faroese grammar (phonetics, morphology and syntax) and that he/she has basic knowledge of semantic concepts. He/she should be able to describe a text linguistically, i.e. analyse a text or text extract. The analysis should be built on concepts used in general linguistics. - that he/she is able to describe the predominant features of Faroese dialects and to point out the most important isoglosses. Other linguistic variations such as sociolects, written language compared to spoken language, etc., can also be included here. The student submits for the examination: 1 Faroese grammar. 1 scholarly work compiled from articles and papers, which treat various aspects of Faroese linguistics. A suitable selection of texts (25-40 p.), which represents various orthographies. The texts should represent the main dialects.
Learning and teaching approaches
2 lectures per week over the course of three terms.
Assessment method
6-hours written examination with external examiners.
