Purpose
To provide the student with knowledge about communication and media (theory, analysis, and history), train the student to analyse, interpret, and critically treat texts and dialogues in their communicative context.
Content
The Communication course deals with the theoretical and historical characteristics of the mass media. The aim of the course is to provide the student with knowledge about communication and media (theory, analysis, and history), train the student to analyse, interpret, and critically treat texts and dialogues in their communicative context. The media will be described and analysed in connection with their rise, development and significance in the industrial and “information” community. For the examination the student is required to discuss central issues of communication and massmedia, analyse the texts of the examination requirements and discuss their communication context, and to discuss important theories on communication and massmedia. The student submits for the exam: 2 works on theories or methodologies for communication analysis. 2 works and 10 texts, which represent different types of communication and massmedia; these may include oral and written texts as well as visual material, massmedia texts and private texts.
Learning and teaching approaches
4 lectures per week over the course of one term or the equivalent.
Assessment method
The student can choose to 1: attend an oral exam with half an hour preparation. The student can use submitted papers and notes for preparation. Or 2: write a free paper at home.
