Purpose
To teach the student to analyse fictional texts as independent units as well as understand them as results of historical conditions.
Content
The goal is to teach the student to analyse fictional texts as independent units as well as understand them as results of historical conditions. The student is required to analyse and explain how the components in a literary work are joined together to create its meaning and special characteristics, and to learn about different methods and theories of studying literature and explain their procedures and aims. A choice of Faroese and other Nordic fictional texts will be analysed in detail. Analysis includes investigation of, among other things, narrativity, structure, figurative language, prosody, style and their importance for the theme and unity of the text. A number of methods will be discussed and examples given of theoretical methology and analytical procedure and its purpose. New criticism, structuralism, critique of ideology, history of ideas, psychological and deconstructive methods may be included. Such comparison will highlight, the methods’ differing analyses and therefore, differing understanding of literature as an aesthetic, ideological and communicative phenomenon. For the examination the student is required to - thoroughly analyse a fictional text - point out the features of style and form and their interplay with the theme and unity of the text - use analytical concepts - describe literary methods.
