Course number
1874.10
Title
Currents in Scandinavien novels 1960-2000
ECTS
10
Purpose
The course has two aims. The first one is to allow students to practice writing about literature, in the sense of writing analytically, using suitable literary concepts and theories, and working methodically. The second aim is to read and analyse novels. Novels are broad extensive texts and therefore necessitate rigorous demarcation and selection of which aspects to discuss. As prerequisites for this course students must have a good grasp of analytical concepts and be well versed in novels by Jens Pauli Heinesen, William Heinesen, Gunnar Hoydal, Oddvør Johansen, Marianna Debes Dahl, Bergtóra Hanusardóttur and Carl Johan Jensen. They will be compared with literary currents in other Nordic countries and we will read a suitable selection of Nordic novels. The course will comprise an extensive written component – please refer to the section on assessment.
Content
The course will be organized into lectures and student presentations on novels and literary questions. Group work about the writing process: 1. Everyone participates actively in debates throughout the course by expressing their point of view and asking questions about the texts read, lectures and student presentations. 2. Oral presentations with handouts, PowerPoint or other materials, individually or in groups. These presentations support and prepare progress reports on works, theories and working methods, which will be revised with the aim of developing them into papers by the end of the course. The written part includes handouts for the oral presentations. 3. Progress reports (3-4 pp.) about works, theories and working methods, which must be submitted two or three times in the course of the semester. They are revised with the aim of developing them into papers by the end of the course. 4. Either two short in-class written tests in the course of the semester or one in the final sessions.
Learning and teaching approaches
Progress reports submitted, oral presentations along with regular attendance make up 2/3 of the final mark and the final paper 1/3.
Assessment method
Written internal in-class exam and a 3-week assignment.
