Title
Society and literature in the 1940ies
ECTS
10
Purpose
The course aims to explore the relation between society and literature from a theoretical and historical perspective.
Content
The relation between society and literature is considered based on the example of a chaotic, uniquely atrocious, period. In the Faroes, as elsewhere, the Second World War characterized the 1940s. To what extent was literature from the war years a continuation of the previous period and to what extent did it break away from the past? Did the trends that emerged in the 40s continue in the 50s or were they limited to the war years? We will look at how the historical circumstances affected the works written and published in the Faroes and among Faroese expatriates in Denmark, how different genres are represented and how the literary public sphere functioned.
