Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required core components of the BA in Faroese or meet other equivalent preconditions. This course may also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
To gain fundamental knowledge about the study of place names throughout history and today.
Content
The course examines how information about Faroese place names is ascertained, their sources and research in the field.
Learning and teaching approaches
The duration of the course is three hours a week over one semester. The approaches used are class-based teaching and student presentations.
Learning outcomes
Successful students are able to demonstrate an understanding of the theories applied to place name studies at a fundamental level and to demonstrate the ability to: • explain concepts and scientific terms applicable to research in the field • categorize place names at a fundamental level • account for Faroese sources on place names • explain how information about place names is ascertained • give an overview of Faroese research on place names
