An academically oriented upper secondary diploma is required. In addition, applicants are specifically required to have a good mark in Faroese at upper secondary A-level and a pass in upper secondary Danish and English at B-level. Successfully completing History of Literature I is a prerequisite for admission on this course.

Purpose: To provide students with insight into Nordic literature, both fiction and non-fiction literature, from the Reformation to 1876, in order for students to understand literature as cultural objects in the context of society and to describe literature as a historical phenomenon in the period from around 1550 to 1876.

The course focuses on Nordic and Faroese literature from around 1550 to 1876, both fiction and non-fiction literature. Course reading materials also include history of literature works, theses and articles on Nordic and Faroese literature in the same period. The status of literature in society will also be discussed from a historical perspective. The course of study may be organised by chronology, periods or milestones in history; it may focus on art history, ideology, social history or political and economic conditions. The course could also be arranged by themes and genres.

This class-based course is structured as two-hour weekly sessions over one semester. The main learning and teaching strategies used are lectures and student presentations, in addition to oral and written exercises, which students will complete individually or in groups.

Successful students can demonstrate ability to: • outline Faroese and Nordic literature in the period from around 1550 to 1876 • describe the trends in literary history in this period • describe the major works of this period • explain the connection between the Faroese, Nordic and international perspective in history of literature • explain different interpretations of texts • indicate how works in history of literature are marked by the scientific and cultural trends of the period in which they were written • compare literary forms and the cultural and societal contexts they are a part of • describe literature as cultural objects in the context of society

6-hour written examination at the end of the course. Materials on the reading list and dictionaries (Faroese, Danish-Faroese/Faroese-Danish, English-Faroese/Faroese-English, Thesaurus) are permitted at the examination.

The course reading list includes 1-2 works of fiction (e.g. novels, collections of poems, plays, non-fiction books; one of the works must be in a language other than Faroese) and 7 short texts; of these short texts, 2 must be non-fiction texts; Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic texts must be represented.
