Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required core component of the BA in Faroese. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
To equip students with insight into and the ability to work with historical changes, particularly in the Faroese language.
Content
Providing student with insight into historical linguistics, as well as theory on why and how languages change.
Learning and teaching approaches
The duration of the course is three hours over one semester. The approaches used are lectures and student presentations; the course will partly examine traditional Faroese ballads. Students will also be given minor assignments on language change in class.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate knowledge of the key concepts in historical linguistics, as well as the changes that occurred from Norse to Faroese. Successful students can also demonstrate ability to read scholarly works on the topic, knowledge of the methods applied in this discipline, as well as ability to work diachronically with linguistic data.
Assessment method
Oral examination with a PowerPoint presentation. Students will be set a question on the last day of teaching. The question will be based on the course bibliography and students will have a week to prepare a 20-minute PowerPoint presentation with 10 minutes for questions. Students are only allowed to bring their presentation to the examination.
