Prerequisites
First 90 ECTS of Bachelor Degree in Faroese . Other students with similar prerequisites can apply for individual course participation.
Purpose
To give the students an outline of the main characteristics of Faroese pictorial art and literature in the 20th and 21st century in order to make the students able to analyse selected works.
Content
Art, primarily by S. J. Mikines, Ruth Smith, Ingálvur av Reyni, Janus Kamban, Frida Zachariassen, Thomas Arge, Tróndur Patursson, Edvard Fuglø, Tóroddur Poulsen and other. Poems and prose by Chr. Matras, William Heinesen, Guðrið Helms¬dal, Carl Jóhan Jensen, Sissal Kampmann, Tórodd Poulsen etc. will be discussed and analysed in a historical and aesthetic context. Picture analysis will be part of the curriculum that also will comprise selected articles on art and literary history and theory as well as the relations between art and literature.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, presentations about selected works of art and literature, concepts etc. The teaching languages are Faroese and Danish.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students are able to • explain the relevant concepts • analyse works of art • describe relations between pictoral art and literure • describe the prevailing trends in art and literature in 20th and 21st century • point out a work’s relevant context in the history of art and literature. • explain the works of art and literature as means of the creation of identity and in terms of globalization • critically discuss selected reviews of works on the curriculum
Assessment method
Paper on an assigned topic - 3 weeks, 15-20 pp.
