Prerequisites
An academically oriented upper secondary diploma with a good average mark in Faroese (i.e. at least 5.8 on the 7-step marking scale or 8 on the marking scale from 00 to 13).
Purpose
To provide students with insight into the earliest Nordic and Faroese literary history from the Middle Ages to 1876. The course aims to teach students to understand literature as a historical phenomenon. The course will emphasise describing both fiction and non-fiction literature in terms of genre and origin, with a view to identifying their context and approaching them as results of the cultural trends of the period in which they were created.
Content
The course focuses on Faroese and Nordic literature up to around the year 1876, both fiction and non-fiction. Course reading materials also include history of literature works, theses and articles on Nordic literature up to 1876. In addition, articles exploring the status of literature in society in the same period are examined. The course of study may be organised by chronology, periods or milestones in history; it may focus on art history, ideology, social history or political and economic conditions. The course could also be arranged by themes and genres.
Learning and teaching approaches
This class-based course is structured as three-hour weekly sessions over one semester. The main learning and teaching strategies used are lectures and student presentations, in addition to oral and written exercises, which students will complete individually or in groups.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate ability to: • outline the earliest history of Faroese literature • identify and describe the earliest Nordic written relics • describe Faroese oral literature • describe the trends in literary history in this period • describe the major works of this period • explain the connection between the Faroese, Nordic and international perspective in history of literature • explain different interpretations of texts • indicate how works in history of literature are marked by the scientific and cultural trends of the period in which they were written • compare literary forms and the cultural and societal contexts they are a part of • describe literature as cultural objects in the context of society
Assessment method
5-hour written examination. All study aids are permitted at the examination, including dictionaries.

Bibliography
The course reading list includes 3 works of fiction (e.g. novels, collections of poems, plays, non-fiction books) and 10 short texts; of these short texts, 2 must be non-fiction texts; texts in at least 3 Nordic languages other than Faroese must be represented. In addition to approximately 400 pages from history of literature works.
