Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required core component of the BA in Faroese. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
To provide students with insight into pragmatics as a branch of linguistics and with the skills to evaluate, analyse and describe language usage and register at different levels and in different fields. Based on relevant theory on pragmatics the course provides abilities and tools to analyse and evaluate variety in language usage.
Content
Based on relevant theories about language usage a selection of oral and written texts will be analysed using different academic approaches, e.g. on stylistics, sociolinguistics and discursive analysis. Samples on political jargon, sports jargon, scientific jargon, media jargon, language in school textbooks will be analysed. We will also discuss language norms and their background.

Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate: • basic theoretical knowledge about pragmatics and language usage and how it is analysed • basic ability to use tools to analyse language usage and stylistics • to evaluate and adapt language for different usage depending on the receiver and the context • ability to relate analysed texts to the theory covered • knowledge about language variety • insight into language norms and their background
Assessment method
Six-hour written examination. The following study aids are allowed in the examination room: Faroese dictionaries, material from the reading list and other material used on the course.
