Prerequisites
Participants must be registered as full-time students at Føroyamálsdeildin and have completed the required core component of the BA in Faroese. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
The course will provide the students with knowledge of rhetoric as an academic discipline and area of research. The students will be introduced to concepts and methods in rhetoric and learn how to use them in analyses of texts, speeches and public debates.
Content
The course focuses on theoretical texts and texts well suited for rhetorical analysis. It begins with an introduction to basic concepts in rhetoric. Along with the introduction, the students learn to analyze texts, speeches and e.g. debates on television. The text material includes classical texts from ancient Greek and Rome, but the emphasis is on contemporary material.
Learning and teaching approaches
The learning and teaching strategies used are lectures, student presentations and class discussions.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will have acquired: • knowledge of rhetoric as an academic discipline and area of research • understanding of concepts in rhetoric and how they are used • knowledge of different genres in rhetoric and rhetoric in different contexts of communication • ability to make rhetorical analyses • ability to analyze and evaluate argumentative discourse
