Title
Literary History I
ECTS
5
Prerequisites
An academically oriented upper secondary diploma is required. In addition, applicants are specifically required to have a good mark in Faroese at upper secondary A-level and a pass in upper secondary English at B-level.
Purpose
To provide students with insight into the earliest Nordic and Faroese literary history from the Middle Ages to the Reformation. The course aims to teach students to understand literature as a historical phenomenon. The course will emphasise describing both fiction and non-fiction literature in terms of genre and origin, with a view to identifying their context and approaching them as results of the cultural trends of the period in which they were created.
Content
The course focuses on Nordic literature up to around the year 1550 A.D, namely, Old Norse literature in translation, oral literature and non-fiction texts. Course reading materials also include history of literature works, theses and articles on Nordic literature up to 1550 A.D. In addition, articles exploring the status of literature in society in the same period are examined. The course of study may be organised by chronology, periods or milestones in history; it may focus on art history, ideology, social history or political and economic conditions. The course could also be arranged by themes and genres.
Learning and teaching approaches
This class-based course is structured as two-hour weekly sessions over one semester. The main learning and teaching strategies used are lectures and student presentations, in addition to oral and written exercises, which students will complete individually or in groups.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate ability to: • outline the earliest history of Faroese literature • describe the history of Nordic literature during this period • identify and describe the earliest Nordic written relics • describe Faroese oral literature • describe these texts and this literature as historical phenomena
Assessment method
During the course sessions, the students – individually or in groups - are required to give an oral presentation with hand-outs (hand-outs with quotes, or an overview of the presentation, PowerPoint etc.). This material is supplemented with two assignments (3 pages each) on other topics. These two assignments are individual assignments. This will constitute the examination materials (approximately 7 pages), which are submitted to the lecturer by the end of the course. If required, the reexamination is a 4-hour written examination. All study aids are permitted at the re-examination, including dictionaries.
