Prerequisites
A pass in Literary Analysis I is required to take this course.
Purpose
To provide students with in-depth knowledge of analytical concepts and textual analysis, focusing in particular on detailed analysis of two of the fiction genres. In addition to equipping students with the skills required to analyse the main characteristics of non-fiction text.
Content
Students will be required to read introductory literature on textual analysis, focusing in particular on two of the fiction genres. Students will also study and analyse varied text examples, mostly from two particular fiction genres, in addition to examples of non-fiction genres.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course will be offered over one semester as two hours a week of class-based teaching. The main learning and teaching strategies used will be lectures, student presentations, written exercises and group work.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate ability to: • analyse fiction texts from two major genres in detail, as well as analyse non-fiction texts in general terms • explain in detail the characteristics of two major genres, as well as explain the characteristics of non-fiction literature in general terms • describe their own approach to textual analysis in two major genres, as well as non-fiction literature • communicate the results of analysis in two major genres, as well as non-fiction literature • express orally and in writing using appropriate language the results of analyses of two major genres, as well as non-fiction literature
Assessment method
5-hour written examination based on an unseen text. Permitted study aids: All dictionaries.
