Prerequisites
An academically oriented upper secondary diploma with a good average mark in Faroese (i.e. at least 5.8 on the 7-step marking scale or 8 on the marking scale from 00 to 13).
Purpose
To provide students with in-depth knowledge about textual analysis, in particular the detailed analysis of the three main genres of imaginative literature: prose, poetry and drama. In addition, the course also aims to equip students with the skills to analyse non-fiction. Students should acquire knowledge about analytical concepts, in particular as related to the main genres of imaginative literature. The course emphasises developing students’ ability to analyse the genres applying analytical concepts.
Content
Students will be required to read introductory literature on textual analysis, focusing in particular on the main genres of imaginative literature and non-fiction. Students will examine varied examples of literary and non-fiction genres.
Learning and teaching approaches
This class-based course is offered as two-hour sessions twice a week over one semester. The main learning and teaching strategies used will be lectures and student presentations, written exercises and group work.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate ability to: • analyse texts from the main genres of imaginative literature in detail, as well as broadly analyse non-fiction texts • explain the characteristics of the main genres of imaginative literature in details, as well as the general characteristics of non-fiction texts • describe their own approach to textual analysis of text from the main genres of imaginative literature, as well as non-fiction text • communicate the results of analysis in the main genres of imaginative literature and non-fiction • express orally and in writing using appropriate language the results of analyses in the main genres of imaginative literature and non-fiction
Assessment method
5-hour written examination based on an unseen text. Permitted study aids: all dictionaries.
