Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required core components of the BA in Faroese or other equivalent preconditions. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
To study how culture, art, and research on the one hand and tourism and the business community on the other can benefit from each other within Tourism Studies and Literary Tourism. Special attention will be given to aspects of creativity, innovation and impact bridging culture and business life. The students will acquire knowledge of how cultural heritage together with the greatest aesthetic performances of the Faroe Islands can be used as brand and storytelling within cultural tourism. The focus will be given on the branding of William Heinesen and Tórshavn respectively as a cultural icon and an icon city. Among the central issues to be discussed will be sustainability and resilience, tangible and intangible values, globalization and authenticity, modernity and cultural heritage.
Content
Works within Faroese and Danish literature will be analyzed together with more practial applied approaches to our own visiting on museums and art galleries. Articles on key concepts within Tourism Studies and Literary Tourism will be read together with analyzes of concrete texts and phenomena related to the present Faroese cultural tourism. Using these tools, perceptions of cultural tourism in a Faroese and a Nordic context will be examined with particular reference to icon cities as Tórshavn, Odense and Vimmerby. Furthermore the focus will be given on the appealing imaginative power of art and cultural heritage related the gaze of the tourists and its potential for developing the identity of the Faroese as well.

Lectures, presentations by teacher and students, group work.
Learning outcomes
Succesful students can demonstrate: • To convey knowledge about the connection between literature and cultural heritage with particular reference to cultural tourism in small towns and on islands. • Critically describe different approaches to sustainability and resilience and to what is commonly perceived as contradictions: globalization and authenticity, modernity and cultural heritage, economic values and intangible values. • Critically using concepts of Tourism Studies and Literary Tourism. • Critically to analyze connections between literature, branding/storytelling. • Critically to analyze connections between museums, branding/storytelling. • To analyze connections between literature, literary walks and museums. • To analyze cultural tourism as niche business (literary tourism, gastrotourism, architecturism etc.). • To put cultural tourism in a globalized context with particular reference to island communities and connections between the local, national, regional and the global.
Assessment method
Take home assignment (1 week) with oral presentation.
