Literature and Pictorial Art and Reality (BA)

Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required core components of the BA in Faroese or other equivalent preconditions. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
To provide the students with knowledge about central points of view and concepts concerning the relationship between the visual and verbal arts in the past and present. Examples from Faroese literature and art in the 20th and 21st centuries will form the material for textual and pictorial analysis. Lines will be drawn to the international, especially Western, context.
Content
The courses will analyse literary texts from J.H.O. Djurhuus to Anna Malan Jógvandóttir and classic and modern art works from Sámali Joensen-Mikines to Silja Strøm The works will analysed in historical and aesthetic contexts comprising selected theories about the relations between art and literature, for instance ekphrasis.
Learning and teaching approaches
Teachers’ lectures and students’ presentations about selected works of literature and art, concepts etc. The teaching languages are Faroese and Danish.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students are able to • analyse works of art and literary texts • explain and use relevant concepts • describe relations between pictorial and verbal art • describe relevant trends in literature and art
Assessment method
Combined exam with question and an oral presentation. The students get 3 days to prepare an oral presentation with materials about a given topic.
