The course is intended for students who have completed the first part of the BA programme in Faroese language and literature (or the equivalent of this). It is possible to enroll in the course as a single subject course with other prerequisites (according to regulations of the relevant programme).

The aim of the course is to gain understanding of the development of the concept of “cultural heritage” and insight in various uses of the term, both in the Faroe Islands and internationally. The course provides an introduction to theoretical discussions on cultural heritage and allows students to assess and participate in ongoing debates on cultural heritage.

What is cultural heritage and what purpose does it serve? Why does it always seem to be endangered? How does it tie together the past and the present? What has it got to do with the nation and the state? Historical consciousness? Globalization? Capitalism? Politics? The course will seek to address these questions with reference to new research in folklore, ethnology, anthropology, art history, sociology, museology, history and archaeology and with a view to understanding what is going on in this expanding field of study.

Tuition takes place as lectures and discussions, along with individual written assignments and student presentations.

By the end of the course the student should be able to: • Account for key aspects of cultural heritage in an historical and contemporary context. • Address various safeguarding efforts and challenges connected to these, both internationally and in a local Faroese context. • Employ basic theoretical concepts to analyse various examples of cultural heritage. • Assess and discuss cultural heritage as an international concept and phenomenon. • Academically assess and discuss various efforts in the field of cultural heritage in the Faroe Islands

30 minute presentation on a given topic, with three days of preparation. Active participation is required on this course and implies regular attendence, presentation in class, completing three multiple choice tests during the course and handing in a written assignment, on which the final exam will be based.
