Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required core component of the BA in Faroese. Admission may also be granted under alternative prerequisites. (Refer to the programme description in force).
Purpose
The purpose of this course is for students to acquire fundamental knowledge about language death, with particular emphasis on Norn and the language shift from Norn to Scots.
Content
Thematically this course has two components. One component focuses on the extinct language Norn and its sources, particularly the ballad Hildina. The other component is a general introduction to the phenomenon language death, with particular emphasis on Norn and its death.
Learning and teaching approaches
Teaching is organised as lectures, student presentations and class discussions.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course can demonstrate ability to: • explain language death and related key concepts • explain Norn and the sources available for this extinct language • analyse its language death drawing on theoretical concepts

Written 6-hour examination.
