Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required core components of the BA in Faroese or other equivalent preconditions. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
The students obtain an insight into the hymn as poetry with a religious function and competence to analyse Faroese hymns in the common field of church history, history of literature, and long lasting international culture.
Content
The theoretical part will deal with the concept of the hymn. The historical part will look into the hymn with focus on church history, history of literature and biography. The analytical and interpretive part will discuss a selection of hymns with regard to form (rhyme, rhythm, image), content (biblical/dogmatic, original/translation), and function (individual/collective, praise/teaching/consolation, text/melody). Hymn writers will include Jákup Dahl, Mikkjal á Ryggi, Sólrún Michelsen, and Teitur Lassen.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lecture, presentation, discussion, group work.
Learning outcomes
Having completed the course, the student will possess an ability to: • identify and define elements that characterize the hymn as a genre. • analyse and interpret hymns with regard to form, content, and function and evaluate their strong and weak characteristics. • see the hymn in relation to Faroese and international literary and church history.
Assessment method
Oral examination, 30 min. The students will have 3 days preparing the answer to an assigned topic.
