Title
Literature and tourism (BA)
ECTS
10
Prerequisites
Students must have completed the required, obligatory component of the BA in Faroese. Admission may also be granted under alternative prerequisites (see programme description).
Purpose
The purpose of the course is to provide the students with knowledge of a multidisciplinary field that combines tourism studies and literary analysis and gives them the ability to use and assess new methods in literary studies working with texts and tourist marketing campaigns. Furthermore, the course aims to make the students capable of discussing tourism studies within recent and historical developments in the field of literary research as well as in a societal context.
Content
Through a combination of tourism studies and literary analysis we will examine how contemporary Faroese literature depicts the interaction between people and places and showcase a shift in this interaction as a result of globalization, and more specifically as a result of an increased tourism in the Faroe Islands during recent years. Bergur R. Moberg writes in Radierende felter (2021) about a new awareness in Faroese society of the look from the outside and that this gives rise “to a new awareness of the Faroe Islands as a destination” (p. 211). Based on analysis and discussions by Moberg and other literary scholars who have studied the interaction between tourism and literature, we will examine how literary depictions of the Faroe Islands have been used in tourist campaigns and ask: what impact does the exploitation of literary depictions have on the cultural and literary landscape in the Faroe Islands – and how is that impact reflected in new literature?
