The students must have completed an upper secondary education or possess equivalent qualifications.

The objective is to give the students a basic understanding of sociology as scientific discipline with emphasis on themes, concepts, theories and methods. The students will learn to use concepts and theories to examine and analyse topics in social science from a sociological perspective.

The module covers classical and modern theories in sociology. Theories and discussions on e.g. welfare, social class and poverty, as well as family, gender, environment and economy. Also, it examines social movements, migration, religion, health, etc. The subjects are as far as possible discussed in relation to the Faroese context and with Faroese cases.

The course seminars count approx. 35 hours in total. The lessons are organised as lectures, presentations, discussions, and exercises. The students also submitt short written assignments.

The students must demonstrate that they: • Are able to describe and explain the historical development of sociology as a discipline. • Understand basic concepts of sociology and know how to explain important sociological theories. • Know how to critically assess the explanatory power of these theories. • Are able to use the sociological concepts and theories to provide an independent description and analysis of societal subjects. • Are able to use sociological methods and sociological perspectives in social science projects.

4 hour written exam with access to all resources. To qualify for the exam, the student has to pass two written assignments.
