Prerequisites
Students are required to hold an upper secondary education diploma or equivalent qualification.
Purpose
To give the students fundamental knowledge about historiography. Focus will be on important schools and traditions in the research of history in order to give the students an overview of how history has developed as an academic field.
Content
Going through the history about how history has been written and researched from its early beginning up to our time, the stundents will learn different ways of understanding and working with history. The course will be based on a textbook about historiography from a global perspective, but emphasis will be on different historical methods and comprehensions based on examples. Focus will be on providing the students with knowledge about historial research in the nordic countries and Europe.
Learning and teaching approaches
The duration of the course is 30 hours. The learning and teaching strategies used are lectures, presentations and discussion. The course is divided into two main sections. Students are required to present a research problem for discussion with the other students.
Learning outcomes
When the course is finished, the students must have: • an ability to evaluate historical research and historical writing. • an ability to explain the development of historical research around the world, particularly from 1800 omwards. • gained knowledge on discussions about different historical theories and different ways of writing and presenting history. • gained knowledge about mothods, theories and concepts used in modern historical research. • Broad knowledge about the historiographycal traditions outside of the western world. • had the opportunity to independently think about the role of history in modern society.
Assessment method
Oral examination with half an hour to prepare. Preparing and giving a presentation to the class is a prerequisite for taking the examination.
