Prerequisites
Students are required to hold an upper secondary education diploma or equivalent qualification.
Purpose
To provide students with: • insight into the methods used in social sciences • insight into how to organize research approaches taking into account research problems and methods • insight into how to use different methods in practice.
Content
The course is based on textbooks on quantitative and qualitative methods. This includes: • Learning about different quantitative and qualitative approaches. • Learning about the philosophical (science theoretical) foundation under the different methodical approaches. • Practical experience with selected methodical approaches.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, group work and exercises.
Learning outcomes
Students shall be able to: • describe the main characteristics of the quantitative and qualitative methodical approaches, their strengths and weaknesses. • Understand the differences between quantitative and qualitative methods and how these can be combined. • collect and analyse quantitative and qualitative data, hereunder be able to use relevant software (e.g. Excel).
Assessment method
Oral examination based on a synopsis. The entire required course bibliography counts towards the examination. In order to pass this course, both the synopsis and oral examination must be approved.
