Prerequisites
Students are required to hold an upper secondary education diploma or equivalent qualification.
Purpose
The purpose of the course is to give the students a basic understanding of how the social sciences have evolved over time, with particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches and practices.
Content
This course examines the history of social science, interdiciplinary approaches, and theory of science (philsophy of science). The focus will be on key issues in the social sciences regarding the nature of knowledge and learning, and the particular challenges of interdisciplinary approaches. The course can be divided into 3 subject areas: a) a historical introduction to the development of social sciences, b) interdiciplinarity and theory of science c) project-based interdisciplinary research.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, classroom discussions, student presentations in class, and exersices. During the course, the students independently have to develop and write an interdiciplinary essay.
Learning outcomes
After completed course, the students will: • be able to desribe the main trends in the historical development of the social sciences. • be able to distinguish between the foundational perspectives in the social sciences (positivism, phenomenology, etc.) • be able to describe what the interdiciplinary approach implies, and to explain its advantages and challenges. • be able to write and orally defend an interdiciplinary essay.
Assessment method
Oral exam basd on the written essay and curriculum.
