Title
Practical Course in Project Management
ECTS
5
Prerequisites

Purpose
In contemporary society an increasing number of activities are organised as projects. Projects often cut across formal organisational boundaries and scientific fields, and therefore have their own advantages and disadvantages. The purpose of this course is to give the students a basic understanding of project organisation and project management, and to give them an opportunity to test these approaches in their own project.
Content
The students are taught basic theory about projects as an organisational and management form, and how project organised work fits in with other organisational forms in contemporary society. It is impressed on the students that projects can only succeed if the project’s environment and its stakeholders (context) are taken into account in the project management process. The course is structured around the major phases all projects go through (ideation, initiation, preparation, start, execution, and final completion). During each phase the students are introduced to: purpose, decision making, analytical tools, and documentation. Special emphasis is put on the phases ‘initiatiation’ and ‘preparation’, and the students have to produce a project description, which is presented at a kick-off seminar. After the kick-off seminar, the project description is adopted according the received feedback, and submitted as an essay. In conection with the implementation phase, the students are taught project steering (meetings and reports). In relation to the completion phase, the students are taught how to evaluate projects.
