Worldview and Ethics

In this course students will learn to understand the role of worldviews and ethics in their profession. They will 1) acquire insight into important aspects of traditions that have shaped Faroese society, become aware of how these influence the work of social educators, and learn to give space to people with various worldviews in day care and other institutions, where social educators work; 2) understand basic ethical theories and concepts and be able to use them in social educational situations; and 3) begin to consider their own role as future social educators, whose task it is to support persons in their personal and social development as they work in day care and other institutions.

• Foundational values and the purpose statement in the Parliamentary Act on Day Care and Day Care Institutions • Basic ideas in Christian and modern views of humanity • Secularism and other important ideas in Western democracies • Basic ethical traditions and concepts • Professional ethics in social education

Lectures, group work, guidance and presentations

On completion of the course, the student should be able to • explain important aspects of various understandings of humanity and society that have shaped Faroese society, and describe the importance of these today, especially in their profession • explain ethical traditions and concepts and show how these are relevant in their profession • identify and argue for the ethical aspects of the social educator’s role is, considering that she or he must both care for the person she or he works with and work within the public frameworks for both day care and other institutions
