General goals in the music major: When teaching music, it is very important that students gain competence in providing accompaniment to singing and other music lessons. In order to meet these and other needs in their vocation, music teachers need to become as competent musicians as possible. Therefore, students will receive lessons in one instrument of their choice while taking the other courses in the music major. In addition, during the second through the fourth course, students will also receive piano and guitar lessons, as well as lessons in music leadership, ensemble and choir. In this, students - will be enabled to lead communal singing on piano or guitar - will gain competence in playing one instrument or sing at a high level - will become competent in singing naturally and freely - will gain competence in conducting larger and smaller groups - will become able to direct ensembles at every level in primary schools Goals for this course: The foundation of all music education at the primary school level is music theory and ear training. The student will attain the foundational knowledge required for understanding music and abstract language. They will gain insight in to the three basic columns in music and will familiarise themselves with melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamism and other musical expressions. Students, when considering music theory, will also gain insight into method and didactics in teaching music. In this course, students will - gain knowledge about the development of musical notation - come to know note values, note pitches and harmonic arrangements - come to know musical expression, compose simple scores and become acquainted with a variety of analytical tools for music, which will enable them to see larger musical wholes - gain competence in writing music and prepare music for different age levels and groups - learn to think about how music theory can be used when teaching at a primary school

General content in all music major courses: - thorough instruction in one instrument at a high level (if no instructor is available internally, one from outside the department will be provided) - instruction in a second instrument, piano and/or guitar, enabling students to play these instruments for the common needs in music education - solid technical instruction in choir and ensemble - instruction in singing technique - introduction to several other instruments, such as the base guitar, drums and other types of percussion Content of this course: - Music theory in regard to method and didactics - Music theory and the writing and composing of music, including how music theory gives a foundation for seeing musical wholes - The three columns of music: melody, harmony and rhythm - Musical expression

Further information on the overall requirements for the music major and the specific requirements for this course will be provided in class. Internal examiners will be used. In order to pass this course, students must pass the particular requirements for this course and the general requirements for the music major. Grades are awarded on a Passed/Not passed basis.
