General goals in the music major: When teaching music, it is very important that students gain competence in providing accompaniment to singing and other music lessons. In order to meet these and other needs in their vocation, music teachers need to become as competent musicians as possible. Therefore, students will receive lessons in one instrument of their choice while taking the other courses in the music major. In addition, during the second through the fourth course, students will also receive piano and guitar lessons, as well as lessons in music leadership, ensemble and choir. In this, students - will be enabled to lead communal singing on piano or guitar - will gain competence in playing one instrument or sing at a high level - will become competent in singing naturally and freely - will gain competence in conducting larger and smaller groups - will become able to direct ensembles at every level in primary schools Goals of this course: A natural part of childhood is to create. Imagination is common to all children, and with it, the disposition to create. In gaining philosophical, theoretical and scientific insight into human imagination and creativity, one is better prepared to relate to children, both those who play musical instruments and those who do not. Common to them all is imagination, and with it, the disposition to create. In this course, students will - acquire thorough knowledge of aesthetic learning processes - learn to listen and to transform what is heard into new aural expressions - divest themselves of all adult prejudices and see the novel through children’s eyes - develop lesson plans that nourish imagination and creative joy, including interaction with other forms of expressions, such as narration and plays, drawing/painting and colours, movements and dance

General content in all music major courses: - thorough instruction in one instrument at a high level (if no instructor is available internally, one from outside the department will be provided) - instruction in a second instrument, piano and/or guitar, enabling students to play these instruments for the common needs in music education - solid technical instruction in choir and ensemble - instruction in singing technique - introduction to several other instruments, such as the base guitar, drums and other types of percussion Content of this course: - Discussion of aesthetics and learning processes as concepts in historical and philosophical perspective - Discussion of abstraction, sound, rhythm and harmony as concepts in philosophical and scientific perspectives - Theories of cognitive development - Imagination and nourishing the imagination, and placing and learning creative skills - Working with themes as imagination, creative skills and aesthetic learning processes appropriate to the various developmental levels of primary school pupils

Further information on the overall requirements for the music major and the specific requirements for this course will be provided in class. External examiners will be used. In order to pass this course, students must pass the particular requirements for this course and the general requirements for the music major. Grades are awarded according to the current grading scale.
