Purpose
To give students a working knowledge of the theories and methodology of ELT to competently and critically evaluate curriculum design for teaching English.

• An overview of the history and development of the English language • English as a global language. • The theories of ELT and EFL • ELT and its methodology • Curriculum, syllabus design and kinds of syllabi Designing EFL lessons for the various levels in the schools.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, learners should be able to: • Describe and critically discuss the various theories of ELT and EFL and compare these to other theories of learning. • Identify the various approaches to ELT methodology and apply them in the context of the classroom. Apply ELT methodologies to evaluate English textbooks in use in schools and their relevance to the curriculum and their efficacy as materials for language learning.
