7228.11 - Exam Project: The Humanities Track

Course number
7228.11
Title
Exam Project: The Humanities Track
ECTS
10.5
Purpose
On completion of the courses in the humanities track, students write an exam project on a topic of their own choosing. However, the topic must be within the themes covered in the humanities track.
Content
This is an independent study, in which students, individually or in groups, complete an exam project. The project is similar to the papers the students have written in other courses in the humanities track, having both a theoretical component and didactic part, which contains teaching material. Students first choose a subject area on which to focus. Then, in conversation with the lecturer of the chosen area, students and lecturer decide on the particular topic on which the individual student or group will write. On basis of this, the lecturer sets out and provides the group with the formal and theoretical requirements for the project. In the first and theoretical part, students will show their ability to analyse and interpret a text, image or film and set it within it its proper context. The lecturer words the question, to which this part is the answer. In the second part, students develop a lesson plan on the topic covered in the first part, choosing and organising appropriate teaching material. The lesson plan is to cover 6 weeks of teaching and be aimed at tenth graders (i.e. 16-17 year old pupils). In addition to being theoretically well grounded, the teaching material must be varied and diverse.
Assessment method
Students, individually or in groups of 2-3, write an exam project. In their projects students will demonstrate their deftness in teaching, i.e. their understanding of education and approach to teaching and their ability to be innovative when teaching set texts and material. The scope of the texts and images covered in the curriculum must be sufficiently substantial, so that the examiners can judge whether the students • have the aptitude to appropriately choose and organise their material • have read broadly enough to choose the right material • are able to raise and discuss questions relevant to the chosen topic • are able to set pupils questions that both initiate their journey into the topic and helps them to delve into its deeper layers If students write individually, the theoretical part of the project is to be 15 pages, if in groups of two, 20 pages, and if in groups of 3, 25 pages (each page being 2400 characters, including gaps). In addition, students write a lesson plan, which constitutes the second part of the project. The final written product will be defended in an oral presentation and exam. Each student has 15 minutes to make his or her presentation. Afterwards, each student will be examined for 10 minutes. Students should expect that it will take approximately 5 minutes to determine their grade. It is expected that students do not merely repeat what they have already written in their projects but accentuate and further develop themes and issues raised in the project. Students will receive an oral evaluation, in which they are given the reasons for the grades they have received. Grades will be awarded according to the current grading scale. Grades are awarded to students individually, not to groups as a whole. This means that students in the same group may receive different grades.
