Title
Europe: 1300-1600
ECTS
13.5
Purpose
This course will consider European history between AD 1300 and AD 1600 from political, cultural, economical and social perspectives and in a geographical and a chronological context. Students will also discuss the continuities and discontinuities between the larger European context and the history of the Faroes in this period. Considering didactics in history teaching, the course will focus on varied approaches to the teaching of history, including learning as experience, considering the history of monuments in particular.
Content
The course consists of two parts, the first being on European history, including Faroes history, between AD 1300 and AD 1600, and the latter being a study trip to Athens, Greece. The focus of both parts is to set the Faroe Islands in a broader European context, considering how this historical era has influenced contemporary society. The course will also focus on how one can use selected monuments and themes in Greek history in teaching and how these may be transferred to a Faroese context. Themes covered are e.g. cultural trends, democracy and a comparative study of modes of living in different countries through history. In addition to considering the history of monuments, we will also consider historical literature, graphic novels, digital information, museums, exhibitions, the history of places and doing history on basis of source criticism. This course will emphasise how pupils learn in very different ways and how they can learn by experiencing something, e.g. by visiting historical sites, museums and ruins. Students will consider how they can plan, conduct and evaluate such experiential learning processes, considering both didactic and subject specific concerns. Students will consider how such teaching can be transferred to Faroese contexts and themes. Student will take the local history as their point of departure, in which cultural artefacts in the pupils’ own context are used as cyphers for themes in and perspectives on various historical eras.
Assessment method
1. Students will write an essay, which includes a didactic component. 2. Students will take an oral exam, in which they are to analyse an unknown text on basis of the material covered in class. External examiners will be used. Grades will be awarded according to the current grading scale. The final grade will be the average of the grades earned for the essay and the exam.
