Purpose
To give students a working knowledge of the history, theories and methodology of English Language teaching (ELT) and the teaching of English as a foreign language (TEFL) to competently and critically evaluate curriculum design for teaching English.
Content
• The theories of ELT • TEFL and its methodology • Curriculum, syllabus design and kinds of syllabi • Designing TEFL lessons for 4-7 & 8-10 in schools
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, projects and pair/group work of student teaching
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, learners should be able to: • Describe and critically discuss the various theories of TEFL. • Identify the various approaches to TEFL methodology and apply them in the context of the classroom. • Apply TEFL criteria to evaluate English textbooks in use in schools and their relevance to the curriculum and their efficacy as materials for language learning.
