Purpose
General goals in the music major: When teaching music, it is very important that students gain competence in providing accompaniment to singing and other music lessons. In order to meet these and other needs in their vocation, music teachers need to become as competent musicians as possible. Therefore, students will receive lessons in one instrument of their choice while taking the other courses in the music major. In addition, during the second through the fourth course, students will also receive piano and guitar lessons, as well as lessons in music leadership, ensemble and choir. In this, students - will be enabled to lead communal singing on piano or guitar - will gain competence in playing one instrument or sing at a high level - will become competent in singing naturally and freely - will gain competence in conducting larger and smaller groups - will become able to direct ensembles at every level in primary schools Goals for this course: Students will study learning processes in music and make lesson plans. In this way, they will get hands-on experience in developing outcome goals for their education. They will learn to find the media and methods needed to reach these goals, and to evaluate learning processes, both while they teach and on completion of the process. In this course, students will gain the competence to - plan a coherent curriculum for music education - find teaching methods and tools that make music education relevant to all pupils - change a lesson plan quickly, if necessary, and to continually evaluate their teaching while they teach
Content
General content in all music major courses: - thorough instruction in one instrument at a high level (if no instructor is available internally, one from outside the department will be provided) - instruction in a second instrument, piano and/or guitar, enabling students to play these instruments for the common needs in music education - solid technical instruction in choir and ensemble - instruction in singing technique - introduction to several other instruments, such as the base guitar, drums and other types of percussion The content of this course: - Didactics in music education - Teaching methods and tools, including acoustic and electric instruments as teaching tools - Practicum, in which students try hands-on what they have learned in class
Assessment method
Further information on the overall requirements for the music major and the specific requirements for this course will be provided in class. External examiners will be used. In order to pass this course, students must pass the particular requirements for this course and the general requirements for the music major. Grades are awarded according to the current grading scale.
