Purpose
To give students a working knowledge of the theories and methodology of ELT to competently and critically evaluate curriculum design for teaching English.
Content
• An overview of the history and development of the English language
• English as a global language.
• The theories of ELT and EFL
• ELT and its methodology
• Curriculum, syllabus design and kinds of syllabi
• Designing EFL lessons for the various levels in the schools.

Lectures, projects and pair/group work
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, learners should be able to:
• Describe and critically discuss the various theories of ELT and EFL and compare these to other theories of learning.
• Identify the various approaches to ELT methodology and apply them in the context of the classroom.
• Apply ELT methodologies to evaluate English textbooks in use in schools and their relevance to the curriculum and their efficacy as materials for language learning.
