Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands
Purpose
The purpose of the course is for the students to get deeper insights and examples on, how a teacher can work with geography as a subject in primary and upper secondary school. Students shall also learn to be critical towards theory, methods, teachingmaterials and selected teaching approaches. The courses focuses on the interaction between physical and human geography.
Content
The course is built up of these main parts - The geological circle - Weather and climate change - Conditions in nature and agricultural patterns - Energy production - Branches and settlements - Infrastructure - Cities and city patterns - Pedagogical opportunities and challenges
Learning and teaching approaches
Varied teaching approaches. Lectures and group work, where students collect and produce teaching materials – both in digital and paper format. Field trips, excursions and outdoor education are also part of the curriculum.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to - explain the difference between geography as a science course and a teaching subject in primary and upper secondary schools - explain different main topics in geography and to show how different aspects of geography are connected - critically evaluate how people´s choices and behavior affect nature and how nature affects people - critically evaluate the pedagogical challenges which are connected to teaching in geography in primary and upper secondary schools
Assessment method
Written assignment, with focus on one main topic in geography. Examination details will be published in a seperate document.
